Pool pumps are the most-replaced piece of pool equipment in Florida. Pick the right one and you save thousands in energy over its life. Pick the wrong one and you fight noise, bills, and breakdowns.
Florida Code: Variable Speed Required
Since July 2021, any replacement pump over 1 total horsepower in Florida must be variable speed. Single-speed pumps cannot be legally installed as a replacement above that threshold.
Sizing the Pump
- Calculate pool volume in gallons.
- Divide by 480 (target turnover of 8 hours).
- That is your gallons per minute target flow.
- Match the pump curve to your plumbing size.

Most Florida pools (15,000 to 25,000 gallons) need:
- Variable speed pump rated 1.5 to 3.0 total HP.
- Flow target of 35 to 55 GPM at low cleaning speed.
- Brands we install most: Pentair IntelliFlo, Hayward TriStar VS, Jandy VS FloPro.
What You Save
A typical Florida home spends $400 to $600 a year running a single-speed pump. Variable speed cuts that to $60 to $120. The pump pays for itself in 2 to 3 years.
