Pool Pump Replacement in Tampa Bay

We determine whether the pump, motor, drive or another part of the system is actually at fault, then select and install a replacement that fits the pool rather than simply copying the old horsepower.

Call or Text

Start with the cause

When a pump actually needs replacement

  • The pump body is cracked, distorted or leaking from the housing rather than a replaceable seal.
  • The motor or variable speed drive has failed and the rest of the unit is not worth rebuilding.
  • Correct parts are discontinued or unavailable for the model.
  • The same significant fault has returned after earlier repair work.
  • The pump cannot deliver the flow the pool needs after the filter, valves and plumbing restrictions have been checked.
  • The existing pump was never a good match for the plumbing or the jobs the system has to perform.

A system problem can look like a pump problem

Weak returns, lost prime, low filter pressure or a heater flow error do not prove the pump has failed. A blocked line, air leak, closed valve, loaded filter or control problem can produce the same complaint. When the cause is not established, diagnosis comes before replacement.

Repair or replace

How we make the decision

A failed motor does not always mean a failed pump. Seals, impellers, drives and motors can be serviceable while the housing and plumbing remain sound. Replacement earns its place when the complete condition, repair history and system needs support it.

  • The pump's age and overall condition, not age by itself.
  • Whether the failure is in the motor, drive, wet end or complete housing.
  • Previous repairs and whether the same fault is recurring.
  • Availability and cost of the correct parts for that model.
  • Compatibility with the filter, heater, salt system and controls.
  • Current energy use and whether the pump spends unnecessary time at full speed.
  • The hydraulic needs of filtration, an attached spa, cleaner and water features.

If the failure has not been identified, start with pool equipment repair and diagnosis. If the pump is newer and the fault looks like a capacitor, seal, bearing or motor, see pool pump repair first.

Selection

Choosing the replacement pump

Matching the old horsepower can repeat an earlier sizing mistake. A replacement is selected against the water it must move, the resistance in the plumbing and every component that depends on its flow.

  • Pool volume and the circulation the water actually needs
  • Suction and return plumbing size, layout and resistance
  • Filter type and the flow range it is designed to handle
  • Minimum flow required by a gas heater or heat pump
  • Flow needed by a salt chlorine generator
  • Attached spa jets and their higher demand
  • Water features, cleaners and other scheduled functions
  • The electrical supply, automation and physical space at the pad

Variable speed

Useful control, not a universal savings promise

A variable speed pump can run filtration at a lower setting, then use a different speed for a cleaner, heater, spa or water feature. That control can reduce energy use when the old pump ran at full speed for every task, and it usually reduces noise at lower speeds.

The result depends on the pump being replaced, its daily run time, electricity rates, plumbing resistance and how the new schedule is programmed. We do not publish a universal savings percentage or payback claim. The useful comparison is between the real operating needs of your pool and the options that meet them.

Variable-Speed Pumps We Install

These are examples of pumps we work with regularly, not a ranking and not a recommendation for every pool. We choose the replacement around the plumbing, the filter, the heater, any features and the flow the system actually needs, rather than matching the horsepower that came off the pad.

Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF 1.5HP Pool Pump

Pentair

Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF 1.5HP Pool Pump

An option we often consider on standard residential pools that are moving off an older single speed pump. It suits pads where the plumbing can carry the flow the filter and cleaner need, and where the owner wants speeds set once and left alone.

Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF 3HP Pool Pump

Pentair

Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF 3HP Pool Pump

A good fit to evaluate on larger pools, pool and spa combinations, long plumbing runs, or systems with water features that ask for more flow at certain times of day. We size it against the plumbing rather than assuming more horsepower is better.

Hayward TriStar VS 950 Variable Speed Pump

Hayward

Hayward TriStar VS 950 Variable Speed Pump

For systems already built around Hayward equipment, keeping the pad on one manufacturer can simplify controls and future parts. We look at the existing filter, heater and any automation before deciding whether this is the cleaner swap.

Installation scope

What installation may involve

A straightforward replacement

A straightforward replacement fits the available pad space, connects to suitable existing plumbing and uses a compatible supply and control arrangement. Even then, new unions, correct bonding and a programmed operating schedule are part of completing the installation properly.

A replacement with modifications

Other replacements need plumbing rerouted, a base adjusted, controls integrated or the supply reviewed before connection. We identify those conditions during the site visit. Work outside a pool contractor's lawful electrical scope is referred to a licensed electrical contractor, and we do not promise permit or inspection requirements before reviewing the actual property and scope.

Homeowner questions

Pool pump replacement FAQs

Often, yes. If the housing, impeller and other wet end parts are sound, a motor or drive replacement may be the better use of money. We inspect the complete pump before recommending the larger purchase.

Not automatically. The old nameplate records a previous choice, not the pool's current requirement. We consider plumbing, filter capacity, heating, sanitation, spa and feature demand before selecting the replacement.

In many systems it can. The replacement still has to fit the plumbing, electrical supply, controls and space on the pad. We verify those conditions and program the useful speeds after installation.

It can when it is selected and programmed within their flow requirements. Filters and heaters each have operating ranges, so compatibility is checked before a pump is ordered rather than after it is installed.

They add operating modes with different flow needs. The selected pump must cover filtration as well as the higher demand of spa jets, cleaners or features without forcing every task to run at the same speed.

You usually cannot know from the symptom alone. Lost prime, weak flow and equipment errors can start at valves, plumbing, filters, controls or electrical components. If the failure is uncertain, schedule equipment diagnosis before deciding to replace the pump.
