Is the pool leaking, or is it evaporation?
This is the question worth answering before anyone spends money. A Tampa Bay pool loses roughly a quarter inch of water a day to evaporation in the summer, and more than that when the pool is uncovered, in full sun, or running a spillover or water feature. Wind and low humidity push it higher again. Water loss inside that range is usually normal and does not point to anything wrong with the pool.
Loss well beyond that, especially more than an inch a week that continues in cooler or rainy weather, is the pattern that suggests a real leak. The autofill running constantly, needing to top the pool up more than once a week, or a water bill that climbed without any change in household use all point the same direction.
Watching the water level over several days with the pump off, then again with the pump running, tells you something useful too. Loss that speeds up while the equipment runs points toward pressure-side plumbing or the equipment pad. Loss that continues at the same rate either way points more toward the shell or the structure.
Signs that suggest a leak rather than normal loss
Soggy ground or unusually green patches in the yard near the pool, settling or movement in the deck, and standing water around the equipment pad are the signs homeowners notice first. Air in the system is another one: a pump losing prime, air bubbles coming out of the returns, or a pump basket that will not stay full of water usually means air is being drawn in somewhere on the suction side.
Cracks at the tile line, separation where the skimmer meets the shell, and staining that follows a line down the wall are worth photographing. None of these confirm a leak on their own, but together with the water loss numbers they give a technician a sensible place to start.
Water loss is worth acting on rather than living with. Water moving through soil under a deck or around the shell keeps working on it, and a small problem that gets ignored for a season tends to cost more to put right than it would have earlier.
Leaks we repair as part of our normal repair work
A good share of the water loss we get called about turns out to be at the equipment pad, where it is visible and straightforward to put right. Cracked fittings, failed unions, worn valve seals, dripping pump seals, filter clamps and heater connections are all inside our normal repair scope, and they are also the most common cause of the air-in-the-system symptoms above. These repairs typically run $150 to $400 and are usually done in one visit.
Visible plumbing above ground or at the pad, and connections we can reach without excavation, are repaired the same way. Where the pool shell has an obvious defect at the tile line or around a fitting penetration, patching or sealing is often practical, and on an older pool that work sometimes makes more sense combined with resurfacing.
Where the problem sits in buried plumbing, the honest answer is that the pipe has to be located precisely before anyone digs. That is specialist work, and we would rather say so than guess with an excavator in your yard.

Florida Pool Heroes does not perform leak locating. We do not run pressure tests, dye tests, acoustic listening or underground line tracing, and we do not sell that as a service. When the water loss cannot be explained by anything visible, the correct next step is a dedicated leak detection company, and we are happy to point you toward specialists in the Tampa Bay area we see doing careful work.
