Salt System Installation in Tampa Bay

Convert a chlorine pool to salt, or replace a salt system at the end of its life, with a chlorine generator sized to your pool and connected equipment.

What a Salt Chlorine Generator Does

A salt system is still a chlorine pool. The salt chlorine generator passes lightly salted pool water through an electrolytic cell that produces chlorine on site, so you handle and store far less chlorine product. Many owners like the steadier chlorine levels and the feel of the water. It is not maintenance free: water balance, salt level, cell cleaning and regular testing still matter.

Installation, Replacement or Repair?

This page covers installing a new salt system: converting an existing chlorine pool, or replacing a complete system that has reached the end of its life or is no longer supported. If your current salt system has stopped producing chlorine, shows error lights or reads the wrong salt level, start with pool salt system repair. Many of those problems are a scaled cell, a sensor, a flow switch or a board, not a reason to replace the whole system.

Converting an Existing Chlorine Pool to Salt

Most pools can be converted without draining. The work adds a control unit and a cell to the return side of the equipment pad, then brings the water up to the salinity the manufacturer specifies. Before recommending a conversion we check the pool volume, the existing plumbing, pad space, the pump and its run schedule, the power available at the pad and any automation the system should connect to.

We also look at the pool's surfaces and features. Salt water can be harder on some natural stone, older metal fixtures and certain deck materials, so we point out anything worth considering before you commit.

Major Components and Sizing

A salt system has three main parts: the electrolytic cell that generates chlorine, the control unit or power center that runs the cell and reports salt and output, and a flow sensor or switch that stops the cell when water is not moving. Some systems integrate with existing automation; others are standalone.

Cells are rated by the pool volume they can serve. Florida pools run year-round in heat and sunlight, which increases chlorine demand, so we generally size the cell with headroom rather than at the exact pool volume. An undersized cell runs near full output constantly and wears faster.

Electrical, Plumbing and Existing Equipment

The cell is plumbed into the return line after the filter and, where one is present, after the heater. The control unit needs a suitable power supply at the pad, and the system must be bonded and connected according to the manufacturer's instructions and applicable code. If the pad needs electrical changes, those are identified in the quote.

The pump schedule matters too, because a salt system only makes chlorine while water is flowing. We review run times and, if the pump itself is failing or oversized, we can discuss pump replacement at the same time. For the rest of your equipment, see pool equipment repair.

What Installation and Startup Involve

Installation typically includes mounting the control unit, plumbing in the cell and flow sensor, making the power and bonding connections, then adding pool-grade salt and balancing the water. Salt takes time to dissolve and circulate, so the system is brought online once the salinity has settled in the manufacturer's range.

We program the output for your pool and walk you through reading the controller, what the indicator lights mean and how to check salt and chlorine. In the first weeks it is worth testing more often while the output setting is fine-tuned.

Ongoing Cell Care

Tampa Bay's hard water deposits calcium on cell plates. Many cells have a self-cleaning cycle that slows scaling, but periodic inspection and cleaning are still needed. Heavy rain dilutes salt, so levels need checking after storms. Cells are a wear item and eventually need replacement; our salt system guide covers what to expect.

Cost Factors and Manufacturer Coverage

We do not publish a fixed installation price. Cost depends on the system brand and cell size, whether it integrates with automation, the electrical and plumbing work at your pad, and how much salt the pool needs. You receive a written quote for your specific pool before work begins.

Salt systems carry a manufacturer's warranty, and the terms vary by brand, model and component. Our installation workmanship is backed by the Florida Pool Heroes 1-year workmanship warranty.

Salt System Installation Across Tampa Bay

We install salt systems for homeowners throughout Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties, with local conditions in mind: year-round swimming, strong sun, afternoon storms that dilute salt, and hard water that scales cells.

Salt System Installation FAQs

Timing depends on the pad layout, the plumbing and the electrical work involved. We confirm the scope on site. After installation, the salt needs time to dissolve and circulate before the system is brought fully online.

We install salt systems from established manufacturers including Pentair, Hayward, Jandy and CircuPool. The right model depends on your pool volume, equipment and whether it should connect to automation.

Requirements depend on the property, the jurisdiction and the work involved, particularly any electrical changes. If the scope requires a permit, we identify that after reviewing the site and the proposed work.

The written quote identifies the system and cell, installation of the control unit and cell, the power and bonding connections, the initial salt, water balancing, programming and a walkthrough of the controller. Anything outside the reviewed scope is discussed before work proceeds.

It depends on the pool volume, the current salt level and the salinity the manufacturer specifies for the system. We calculate and add the initial salt as part of the installation.

No. A salt pool is still a chlorine pool. Water balance, salt level and regular testing still matter, and the cell needs periodic inspection and cleaning and eventual replacement.
