Pool emergencies happen on Saturday afternoons, holidays, and right before pool parties. Here is the priority order when something goes wrong.

Step 1: Cut Power at the Breaker

Anything smoking, sparking, or making grinding noises gets shut off at the breaker first. Do not touch wet equipment with the power on.

Step 2: Identify the Failure Type

Pool losing water fast: turn off the autofill, check around the pad for leaks first, then the pool light niche and skimmer throat.
Pump will not start: reset the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.
No suction or flow: check skimmer baskets and pump lid o-ring.
Salt system error: usually safe to leave on overnight.
Heater error: shut off the gas valve.

If the pump will be off more than 24 hours in Tampa heat, add a chlorine shock. Stagnant 85+ degree water turns green in 48 hours.
