Filters are the workhorse of every Tampa pool. Heat, pollen, oak debris, and high bather load all push them past their limits. Here are the issues we see every week and what they take to fix.
Cartridge Filter Problems
- High pressure right after cleaning: cartridges are oil-saturated and need a chemical soak or replacement.
- Pressure climbs fast: you have algae or a chemical imbalance loading the filter.
- Water still cloudy after cleaning: torn pleats. Cartridges last 2 to 4 years in Florida.
Sand Filter Problems
- Sand in the pool: broken lateral or standpipe inside the filter.
- Pressure will not drop after backwash: channeled or calcified sand. Sand needs replacement every 5 to 7 years.
- Multiport leaking: spider gasket worn out.

DE Filter Problems
- DE in the pool: torn grid. Replace the full grid set.
- Short filter cycles: manifold or grid cracked.
When to Repair vs Replace
If your filter is over 10 years old and needs more than a $300 repair, replacement usually makes more sense. New cartridge filters with larger square footage handle Tampa's load far better.
