Filter Replacement, Not Just Filter Repair

Filter repair and filter replacement solve different problems. Repair restores an existing filter by replacing cartridges, grids, sand, o-rings, valves or internal parts. Replacement is the right call when the filter itself is damaged, obsolete, undersized, inefficient or no longer economical to keep fixing. This page covers replacement. If you are not sure which you need, our pool filter repair team starts with a diagnosis.

Cartridge Filters

No backwashing and simple cleaning. Sized by square footage of media so the filter is not overloaded by Tampa Bay debris.

Sand Filters

Simple, durable and forgiving. They capture larger particles than cartridge or DE and are cleaned by backwashing.

DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters

The finest filtration of the three types, with more involved cleaning and periodic grid inspection.

Signs a Pool Filter May Need Replacement

Some filter problems are repairs and some are the filter telling you it is done. The signs that point toward replacement include a cracked or bulging tank, a leaking tank body or lid that cannot be sealed, a broken internal manifold or laterals that keep failing, clamp bands or threads that no longer hold, and a filter that returns sand or DE to the pool even after internal parts have been replaced.

Performance is the other signal. A filter whose pressure climbs quickly after every cleaning, a filter that cannot keep the water clear despite balanced chemistry, or a filter that is simply too small for the pump pushing water through it will keep costing time, chemicals and cleaning effort until it is replaced with the right size.

When Repair Still Makes Sense

Replacement is not the automatic answer. A sound tank with worn cartridges, torn DE grids, channeled sand, a failed multiport valve or a leaking o-ring is usually a repair, and that work belongs with our pool filter repair service. We say so when a repair is the better spend.

Replacement becomes the better option when the tank itself is compromised, when parts for an older model are hard to source, when repairs are recurring, or when the filter was never sized correctly for the pool and pump. In those cases, putting new media into the old body only postpones the decision.

Choosing Between Cartridge, Sand and DE

Cartridge filters are common in Tampa Bay because they do not need backwashing and handle heavy leaf and pollen loads well when they are generously sized. Cartridges need periodic hosing and eventual replacement, and hard water can embed calcium in the pleats over time.

Sand filters are straightforward and tolerant of neglect, but they trap larger particles and use water every time they are backwashed. DE filters deliver the finest filtration, at the cost of more involved cleaning, DE powder handling and grid inspection. The right choice depends on your pool size, bather load, tree cover, screen enclosure, how much maintenance you want to do and what your existing plumbing supports.

Sizing, Compatibility and the Equipment Pad

A replacement filter is selected against the pump, not just the old filter. The filter must be rated for the flow the pump produces, and an undersized filter runs at high pressure, needs constant cleaning and restricts circulation. Many builder-installed filters are smaller than the pool really needs, so replacement is often a chance to size up.

We also look at plumbing size, port locations and height, available pad space, valve configuration and how the filter connects to the pump, heater and salt cell. Some replacements bolt into the same footprint; others need re-plumbing or a different valve. If the pump is also near the end of its life, it can make sense to look at pump replacement at the same visit.

What Filter Replacement Involves

A typical replacement starts with an assessment of the existing filter, pump and plumbing and a written scope before work begins. On installation day we shut down and isolate the equipment, remove the old filter, set the new filter, connect the plumbing and valves, add media where the filter type needs it, then prime the system and check pressure, flow and connections for leaks before we leave.

We also walk you through cleaning and pressure readings for the filter type you chose, and we remove the old filter from the property.

Cost Factors and Manufacturer Coverage

We do not publish a fixed filter replacement price because the cost depends on the filter type and size, the brand and model, whether the plumbing or valve needs to change, the condition of the connected equipment and how accessible the pad is. You receive a written quote for your specific pool before any work starts.

New filters typically carry a manufacturer's warranty, and the terms vary by brand and model. Our installation workmanship is backed by the Florida Pool Heroes 1-year workmanship warranty.

Filter Replacement Across Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay filters work harder than most. Pools run year-round, oak and palm debris is heavy, summer storms wash in dirt, and hard water scales media. We replace filters throughout Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties and size them with those conditions in mind. For the full range of equipment we diagnose and fix, see pool equipment repair.

Filter Replacement FAQs

If the tank is cracked, leaking, undersized or the internal parts keep failing, replacement is usually the better option. If the tank is sound and the problem is worn cartridges, torn grids, old sand or a valve, a repair is usually enough. We diagnose the filter before recommending either.

Timing depends on whether the new filter fits the existing plumbing or needs re-plumbing or a valve change. We confirm the expected scope and time on site before work begins.

We install filters from established manufacturers including Pentair, Hayward, Jandy and Sta-Rite. The right model depends on your pump, plumbing and the filter type you choose.

Requirements depend on the property, the jurisdiction and the work involved. If the scope requires a permit, we identify that after reviewing the site and the proposed work.

The written quote identifies the new filter, removal of the old unit, the plumbing and fittings needed, media where the filter type requires it, startup and pressure checks. Anything outside the reviewed scope is discussed before work proceeds.

For many Tampa Bay residential pools, a generously sized cartridge filter offers a good balance of filtration, water savings (no backwashing) and easy maintenance. DE filters provide the finest filtration, and sand filters are the simplest but capture larger particles. We recommend a type based on your pool size, bather load and tree cover.
