Pool Resurfacing in Tampa, FL
We replace the worn interior finish in your pool: plaster, quartz, pebble and aggregate. The old surface comes off or gets prepared properly, then the new finish goes on and we take the pool through startup.
Resurfacing replaces the material your hand touches under the water. The shell stays, the plumbing stays, and the layer bonded to the inside of that shell is what changes. That is the part that goes rough, chalks, holds stains and eventually starts letting go in sheets.
Owners here call for one of two reasons: the pool has become unpleasant to swim in, or a service tech has said the finish will not hold much longer. Our first job is to look at the surface in person and tell you which you are dealing with.

Diagnosis
Signs the interior finish is finished
You do not need all of these before resurfacing is worth pricing. Two or three together usually means the finish is at the end of its working life rather than having a bad season.
- 01The surface scrapes feet and swimsuits. Rough plaster is the most common reason owners here start looking.
- 02A white dusty film comes off on your hand or the brush, which is the binder breaking down.
- 03Stains stay put through balanced chemistry, brushing and a sequestrant.
- 04The finish looks eaten away in patches and pitted.
- 05Aggregate stands proud of the surrounding matrix on a pebble or quartz pool.
- 06Tapping a section sounds hollow, meaning the finish has released from the shell.
- 07Sheets or flakes have lifted, most often on steps and benches.
- 08Old patches keep failing at their edges, so the pool reads as a map of previous repairs.
- 09Color has gone blotchy in a way acid washing no longer evens out.
Being straight with you
Repair the finish, or replace it?
Not every failing spot means the whole surface has to come out. It is worth being honest about where the line sits.
Isolated damage on an otherwise healthy finish is a repair. One hollow area, a chipped step edge or a localized crack can be cut out and patched, and if the rest of the surface is smooth and sound that is the right call. The patch will show, which on a surface with life left in it is a cosmetic trade rather than a structural one.
Patching stops being good value when the surface around the repair is failing at the same rate. Every patch then buys a few months and adds another visible mark, and the running total goes toward a finish you are replacing anyway.
We will not give you a rule about how many hollow areas force a replacement. It depends on where they are, how large they are and what a full sounding shows. That is what the walkthrough is for.

Choosing a surface
Interior finishes we install
These are the interior finish categories we install. The choice is about appearance, texture underfoot and how the surface behaves over time rather than about brand names on a sample board.
- Plaster
- The traditional cement based finish. Smooth, bright and the most affordable way to put a clean surface back in a pool. It also shows chemistry neglect soonest, so it suits owners who keep the water balanced or use a service.
- Quartz
- Crushed quartz blended into the cement matrix. Holds color better than plain plaster and resists etching and staining more successfully. The common middle choice for owners who want durability without moving to pebble.
- Pebble
- Small natural pebbles in a cement matrix, giving a textured floor and a deeper water color. The most durable of the common finishes. The texture is a genuine consideration for young children and bare feet.
- Exposed and premium aggregate
- Polished aggregate and glass bead surfaces, finished smooth rather than left rough. The most distinctive look and the highest material cost, and worth seeing in person before choosing.

Before the new surface
What happens once the pool is drained
Most of the skill in a resurfacing project happens before any new material goes on. This is the part homeowners rarely see and the part that decides whether the finish lasts.

Draining
The pool comes down to empty on a planned schedule, because groundwater conditions matter and an empty shell should not sit.

Sounding the surface
With the pool empty we sound the entire interior, so hollow sections that were guesswork from the deck become measurable.

Removal or preparation
The old surface is chipped off or mechanically prepared to accept a bond, depending on condition and how many finishes are already on the shell.

Repairing the substrate
Whatever the old finish was hiding is dealt with before the new one covers it: cracks, deteriorated substrate and failed previous patches.

Waterline and fittings
Tile line, main drain, returns, lights and skimmer throats form the edges the new finish has to meet cleanly. Loose tile is decided on now.

Bond preparation
The shell is cleaned and treated so the new finish bonds to it rather than sitting on it. Skipping steps here is why young finishes delaminate.

What resurfacing will not fix
A new interior finish makes a dramatic visual difference, which is exactly why it is worth being clear about what it does not touch.
- Pumps, filters and heaters that are past their service life. A clean pool with tired equipment is still a pool with tired equipment.
- Leaks in the plumbing lines, at fittings or through the shell that are not caused by the finish.
- Coping that has cracked, lifted or spalled where the deck meets the pool.
- Deteriorated or dated waterline tile, which sits directly above the new finish and will be more obvious afterwards, not less.
- Old lighting, including fixtures and niches that were never suited to modern LED conversion.
- Spa condition beyond its own interior surface, including spillways, jets and blowers.
- Deck and hardscape condition, which frames the pool and does not improve because the water looks better.
If the finish really is the main problem, resurfacing is the whole job and we will scope it that way. If the tile, coping, lighting, spa or equipment are also due, that is a remodeling conversation, and planning it as one project is usually cheaper than coming back, because the pool is drained and staged once instead of twice. Pool age and previous finishes across Tampa
Tampa covers a wider range of pool ages than anywhere else we work. A pool behind a Seminole Heights bungalow may be on its third interior surface while a pool in Tampa Palms is reaching its first. On a pool with layers of previous work, whether the existing material can be prepared or has to come off entirely is the largest variable in the scope.
Older inner neighborhoods bring a second issue: access. Narrow side yards, alley approaches and mature landscaping around Hyde Park, Palma Ceia and Tampa Heights affect how material reaches the pool and how debris leaves it. It changes staging rather than the finish work, and it is easier to plan on the walkthrough than on the morning of the chip out.
Permitting for a Tampa address runs through the City of Tampa rather than the county, because Tampa is incorporated. We confirm what your scope requires before anything is scheduled rather than assuming either way.

How we work
How the project runs
We do not publish a fixed schedule, because weather, condition and material choice all move it. The sequence itself is consistent.

Look at the pool
We inspect the surface, waterline, fittings and shell in person. A photograph cannot tell us whether a surface is chalking or simply dirty.

Agree the scope
A written scope covering what is being removed, what is being replaced and what is deliberately excluded.

Choose the finish
Samples in hand, in daylight, against the tile and deck you already have.

Drain and prepare
Removal or preparation, substrate repairs and bond preparation, as described above.

Installed continuously by the crew, because a surface applied in one pass behaves better than one applied in stages.

Fill and start up
The pool goes back on water immediately, and the startup period begins from there.
The first weeks after the fill
The first weeks after a new finish are the part owners underestimate. The surface is still curing, and how it is treated during that window affects how it looks for years.
Filling is continuous once it starts, because stopping partway leaves a line at the water level that does not come out later. From there the water needs frequent testing and adjustment, and brushing matters more in these weeks than at any other point in the pool's life.
Startup requirements are not identical for every finish. Plaster, quartz, pebble and polished aggregate carry different manufacturer instructions, and some exclude treatments that are perfectly normal later. You get the procedure for the finish you chose in writing, not a generic sheet.
Condominium, hotel and association pools
Tampa has a heavy concentration of shared water: condominium and apartment pools around Westshore and downtown, hotel pools along the Channelside and Bayshore corridors, and association pools throughout New Tampa. Those interior finishes wear faster than residential surfaces because they are used constantly and brushed far less often.
The work is the same. The documentation is not. A board or property manager needs a scope they can review, approve and hold us to, and the out of service window has to be understood before anything is drained.
