Pool Resurfacing in Carrollwood, FL
Interior finish replacement for established Carrollwood pools. We take off or prepare the old surface, repair what is underneath, install a new plaster, quartz, pebble or aggregate finish and manage startup.
Resurfacing replaces the interior lining of the pool. Everything structural stays where it is. The layer that gets removed is the one carrying the roughness, the chalk, the stains that will not lift and, on older pools, the sections that have quietly separated from the shell.
Around here that conversation usually starts with a pool that has been through it before. A second or third finish behaves differently from a first, and what is already on the shell changes how we prepare it.

Diagnosis
Signs the interior finish is finished
Any one of these on its own may be worth a repair. Several of them at once on a pool that has already been refinished usually means the surface has run out of road.
- 01Feet and swimsuits catch on the surface, particularly on steps and the shallow floor.
- 02The brush lifts a chalky residue that settles back overnight.
- 03Dark organic staining persists after balancing and brushing, which is common under heavy tree cover once the surface has gone porous.
- 04The finish has an etched, pitted texture rather than a smooth one, most visible on the walls.
- 05Aggregate has become pronounced underfoot on a pebble or quartz pool as the surrounding matrix has worn away.
- 06Hollow sounding areas turn up when the surface is tapped, meaning the finish has released underneath.
- 07Flaking or sheeting has started, usually at step nosings and light niches.
- 08Previous patches have opened at their edges and are now more visible than what they covered.
Being straight with you
Repair the finish, or replace it?
On a mature pool this decision matters more than the finish color, so it is worth working through properly.
A repair makes sense when the surrounding surface is genuinely healthy. A single hollow section on a finish that is otherwise smooth and well bonded is a contained problem, and cutting it out and patching it is proportionate. The color will not match exactly on an aged surface, which is usually an acceptable trade.
The calculation changes on a pool that has already been refinished more than once. Each layer narrows what can be done next, and repairs on a surface that is failing broadly tend to reappear near the edges of the last one. If you are being asked to patch the same pool repeatedly, that money is better put toward the replacement you are heading for anyway.
We will not publish a threshold saying that a given number of hollow areas forces full removal. Position, size and what the sounding reveals all matter, and that assessment is the point of the visit.
Choosing a surface
Interior finishes we install
The finish categories we install are set out below. On a shaded, tree heavy property the practical differences matter more than usual, because the surface is dealing with a continuous organic load.
- Plaster
- Classic cement based plaster. Bright, smooth and the least expensive route back to a clean surface. Under a mature canopy it shows organic staining first, so it suits owners with strong filtration and a brushing habit.
- Quartz
- Quartz aggregate in the cement matrix. Denser and less porous than plain plaster, which is the reason we recommend looking at it seriously on shaded pools where staining pressure is constant. It holds its color noticeably better as it ages.
- Pebble
- Natural pebble in a cement matrix. It deepens the water color and hides a heavy debris load better than a bright white surface. The floor texture is real and worth standing on before deciding.
- Exposed and premium aggregate
- Polished aggregate and glass bead finishes, where the aggregate is finished smooth rather than left textured. The most distinctive option and the highest material cost of the group.
We bring samples to the property and look at them next to your existing tile, coping and deck. What we avoid is putting a service life figure on your particular pool, because shade, debris load and how the water is managed will move that more than the material choice does.
Before the new surface
What happens once the pool is drained
Preparation is where a resurfacing project is won or lost, and on an older pool there is more of it. Here is what happens between draining and the new surface going on.
- 1
Draining
The pool is emptied on a planned schedule, groundwater conditions checked, and the shell is not left standing empty longer than the work requires.
- 2
Full sounding
The whole interior is sounded once the water is gone. On a pool that has been refinished before, this routinely finds more separated material than anyone expected from the deck.
- 3
Removal or preparation
Existing layers are chipped out or mechanically prepared. Multiple previous finishes make complete removal considerably more likely than on a first refinish.
- 4
Substrate repair
Cracks, deteriorated material and failed historic patches are addressed while the shell is exposed.
- 5
Tile line and fittings
Waterline tile, drain, returns, light niches and skimmer throats form the edges the finish must meet. Loose or ungrouted original tile is decided on here.
- 6
Bond preparation
The shell is cleaned and prepared so the new surface bonds mechanically to it. Rushing this is what separates a finish that lasts from one that delaminates young.

We look at the finish in person, sound it where we can reach it, and tell you whether you are looking at a repair or a replacement. You get a written scope covering what is included before anything is booked.
Scope
What resurfacing will not fix
New plaster inside forty year old surroundings is the most common way a project ends up looking half done. These items are outside the resurfacing scope.
- Original waterline tile, which sits immediately above the new surface and becomes the most noticeable thing on the pool afterwards.
- Coping that has cracked or lifted where deck and pool have moved differently over decades.
- Pumps, filters, heaters and sanitizers that have reached the end of their working lives.
- Plumbing leaks and fitting leaks that have nothing to do with the interior surface.
- Light fixtures and niches still running the technology the pool was built with.
- Attached spa condition beyond its own interior surface, including the spillway and its tile.
- Deck surfaces around the pool, which frame everything and do not improve on their own.
Where the surface is genuinely the only tired element, resurfacing on its own is the right project. Where the tile, coping, lighting or equipment are also due, you are looking at a remodel rather than a resurface, and pricing it as one project beats paying for access twice. Local knowledge
Refinishing pools that have been refinished before
Carrollwood, Carrollwood Village, Northdale and Lake Magdalene were developed long before the master planned communities further out, and the pools show it. A large share of them are not on their original surface. That single fact drives most of what we do differently here, because what is already bonded to the shell decides whether the next finish can be applied over prepared material or whether everything has to come off first.
The tree canopy is the second local factor and it is not decorative detail. Mature oaks put a continuous organic load into these pools, and once a surface has gone porous it holds that staining in a way chemistry stops correcting. Owners often assume the water is the problem when the surface has actually become the problem, and the difference is easy to demonstrate standing next to the pool.
On paperwork, Carrollwood is an unincorporated community in Hillsborough County, so there is no municipal building department for a Carrollwood address and county permitting applies where a permit is required. Several Carrollwood Village neighborhoods are also deed restricted, and visible exterior work can attract an architectural review step from the association. We raise both at the walkthrough so they run alongside the project rather than delaying it.
We resurface pools throughout Carrollwood, Carrollwood Village, Northdale and Lake Magdalene, and on older pools we sound the whole interior before quoting anything.

How we work
How the project runs
We will not print a completion window, because condition and weather both move it. The order of events does not change.
- 01
Site visit
We look at the interior surface, the tile line, the fittings and the shell in person, and sound what we can reach.
- 02
Written scope
What comes out, what goes in, and what is specifically not included. Agreed before work is scheduled.
- 03
Finish selection
Samples viewed on site in daylight, against the hardscape the pool already has.
- 04
Drain, remove, repair
Emptying, removal or preparation, substrate repairs and bond preparation.
- 05
Installation
The new finish is installed in a continuous pass by the crew.
- 06
Fill and startup
Filling begins immediately and the curing period starts from there.
The first weeks after the fill
The curing weeks are not a formality. A surface treated carelessly in the first month can carry the evidence permanently.
The fill runs without interruption, because a pause leaves a permanent mark at the water level. Through the weeks that follow the water needs regular testing and correction, and brushing matters more now than it ever will again.
Requirements differ by material, and a plaster, quartz or pebble startup is not interchangeable. Under heavy tree cover there is one more point: organic debris landing on an uncured surface should be lifted promptly rather than left to sit. You get the specific procedure for your finish and we stay reachable while it cures.
Association and condominium pools
This area holds deed restricted communities and condominium associations whose shared pools were built alongside the surrounding housing and aged with it. Those interiors take heavier use and are brushed far less often than a backyard pool, so they reach this conversation earlier than their age suggests.
A board approves this work, not an individual, which means the scope has to be written clearly enough to be reviewed by people who are not standing at the pool. We document what is being removed, what is being installed and what falls outside the scope, and we set out the out of service period so the community can be told. As a licensed commercial pool and spa contractor we can carry out that work, and requirements applying to public pools are confirmed with the authorities having jurisdiction for the specific facility.
